Akita's pride, the pinnacle of lunch boxes: the aromatic cedar "Magewappa" bento box, unfinished and in its natural pale wood form.

The "Odate Magewappa," designated as a traditional craft of Akita, originated during the Edo period under the encouragement of Satake Yoshiatsu, the lord of Akita domain, as a side job for samurais. In recent years, it has gained attention for its sustainable use of forest resources and the cedar material's humidity control effect, which keeps rice delicious even when cold. Shibata Keishin Shoten, founded in 1964 when Shibata Keishin entered the world of bentwood work, has continued to create Magewappa for over 50 years. Currently led by the second generation, traditional craftsman Shibata Masamasa, who was featured in the "LEXUS NEW TAKUMI PROJECT 2017" as a modern flagbearer, requested for demonstrations worldwide. In the production process, which includes sawing, shaving, bending, and bottom insertion, he also serves as a producer. Additionally, he collaborates with product designer Masanori Oji to create the new "Magewashi Series," showing a dedication to innovation.

The wood used is natural cedar from Akita and its surroundings, chosen for its elasticity suitable for bending, excellent moisture absorption, and antibacterial properties. After dividing into parts, the ends of the board to be bent are thinly processed. Then, they are soaked overnight before boiling, making it possible to bend the wood without breaking. After shaping, the piece is dried for 10–14 days before the joints are glued. Then, the bottom is fitted while considering the wood grain, and it's smoothed with sandpaper to finish. The final step involves the "Sakura Bark Closure (Kaba Closure)," a characteristic feature of Magewappa, where thin, shaved strips of cherry bark are threaded through holes in the joint area, creating the distinctive darker spots seen on the side.

The sight of a Magewappa bento, whether round or oval, packed with colorful ingredients, is truly beautiful. While browsing social media, one might find incredible bento that could be called "works of art," but even simply packing ordinary ingredients without much effort can feel special and taste delicious in a Magewappa. Its utility becomes apparent with use, without needing to create anything extravagant. The "Koban Bento Box Medium" enjoys the typical Magewappa shape and the pleasure of being packed full in one layer. The "Tsukushi Bento Box" offers two tiers for separating rice and side dishes, conveniently combining into one after eating. However, many might think, "Doesn't it seem difficult to care for and use properly?" Yet, only two key points need attention: wetting the inside with water before packing food, and after eating, rinsing with hot water or water, scrubbing with a brush and cleanser, and thoroughly drying over a day. Essentially, care before and after use is crucial, as with any tool. Take the first step and experience the benefits of Magewappa for yourself.
